Photoshop acting very slow :(

Hey,

Yes its me again with some more problems :P

Well i have PS CS2, and it was working fine. Then one day ive downloaded a lot of fonts and i install them in font folder. And when i load photoshop it started to act strange. Picking up tools it takes like 5 sec to select the tool ive selected. I mean its very slow. Wha do u think its wrong? I ve installed like 1000 fonts, do u think thats the problem? If it is, how do i remove them from windows/font folder?

tnx for the anwser

Well, the number of fonts that are installed certainly has a bearing on the speed that Photoshop initialises, and it may well have an effect when you get the application up and running, too - as well as on other applications that use fonts such as MS Word.

You can manage your fonts with the Fonts control panel applet, but to be honest, that's a bit crap. What you really need is a 3rd-party utility such as The Font Thing. It's easy to use and above all, it's FREE!

The link is here: Sue Fisher: The Font Thing

Send a message via MSN to notjustgraphics
I am using The Font Thing for XP... and it works just fine.

I'm not sure there is a special version... just download the most recent PC version from Tamlin's link.

You can also consider the Adobe Type Manager Light which is a free download from adobe.com Adobe - Type Manager Light

You should be able to remove the files from the folder and it will do the trick (after rebooting the machine).

Using a font manager is always the best option though. That way you can activate and deactivate the fonts as you need them.

I wouldn't delete all the fonts. There may be some that it won't let you remove anyway. I would suggest installing the Font Thing software (or another piece of software) and then unistalling/deactivating the fonts with that.

If you don't plan on using any kind of type manager then I would do take any fonts that have been added more recently and move those into another folder (you could sort by date added/modified to get a quick idea of which fonts may be more recent)

Keep in mind though, any time you start messing with fonts or having duplicates on the computer, you are playing with fire. Fonts are one of the top 5 things that reak havoc on a computer system. Having orphan fonts (incomplete) duplicate fonts, corrupt fonts etc. can really screw with how the system runs.

Like notjustgraphics, I have The Font Thing working fine in XP. As far as I know, it works in all versions of Windows from 95 onwards.

I would also repeat what stiney51 has said - you really need to use a font manager of some sort to manage your fonts (especially as you have so many). What you certainly don't want to do is to go hacking away blindly at the files in the Fonts folder, as some of them are system fonts which, if you delete them, will cause you all manner of pain. One of the things that The Font Thing does is to allow you to install and/or uninstall any number of fonts at once. You can also load or unload fonts on a temporary basis, so if you "unload" a system font by accident, you can easily "load" it again.
