Hear is a really dumb question?

How can you tell a soft brush from a hard brush and so on or do they go by the amount of transparency?

If you set your brushes to display as either Large Thumbnail or Small Thumbnail (from the Brush dropdown menu) you can usually tell just by looking at them. Also, you'll see two sliders: Master Diameter (measured in pixels) and Hardness (measured in percentage). 0% Hardness is as soft as you can get, 100% Hardness is as hard as you can get. Hardness doesn't equal transparency, though. It relates to the edges of the selected brush.
