Has anyone got any hints on how to highlight and shadow faces as i`ve tried one or two ways but it never looks convincing , they always end up looking like aliens .

You can't beat a bit of skilful dodging & burning.

Or you could create two new layers with soft light;
One for shadows where you "paint" the shadows with black
One for highlights where you "paint" the highlights with white
Remember to use a low flow on the brush or low opacity on the layers
highlights and shadows on faces
