I use this and extract, but it is easy to forget Growcut as it is under select, not filters. Its a good freeby.

I've just downloaded and tested this, and I'm very impressed. As Tony said, it's the perfect tool to use in conjunction with Extract - and free, too (which is always a bonus!)

I tested it too. If I test these sort of plugins I use a picture where the cutout subject has more or less the same colors as the background. Very bad result or I do something wrong. And you will always have trouble with people with thin hair (not with the people but with the hair).
I always end using the freehand (not the free option but point to point, feather 2 and antialias checked).

It does seem to work by recognising colour and tonal differences between the areas you specify as "foreground" and "background", so it's not going to be right for all occasions - but then, that's where the other Photoshop tools come in. I still think it's pretty good for a freebie and worth adding to the toolbox.

I can never get a good result with extract or growcut for the finer objects I have to use a masked layer and spend hours doing it by eye. No matter how many times I have tried to perfect it as it shows you in the Adobe books and in tutorials.

Well guys...it's problably not as good as a 199€ Fluid Mask but for a free plugin you can not ask for more. It looks like a fast solution for non complex backgrounds anyway.
You can always use the quick mask for the missing selections.

Can you give us a bit more information as to how it's not working? The interface seems pretty much foolproof to me.

I downloaded and will give it a try. Sounds like it is worthwhile addition. Fluid Mask is what I have now and if this is anywhere close, the price is right.

Wow - that's a big question! I would guess that there are probably more ways to do that than almost anything else in Photoshop. The thing is that the Photoshop toolbox (and by "toolbox" I mean the various plugins, filters etc. that are available as well as the standard Tools) is not like a mechanic's or carpenter's toolbox, in that you only use certain tools for certain jobs. For example, if you want to knock in a nail you would use a hammer, not a screwdriver, because that's the tool designed for the job. In Photoshop, not only can you use the same tool to do lots of different jobs, but you can also do the same basic job with lots of different tools. Confused? You will be!

The upshot of this is, for the specific question you have asked, you need to analyse your starting image and then decide on the best tool for the job because the way that you remove a background from an image will vary according to the image. Also, different Photoshop users will approach the same image in different ways - some people will always reach for the Pen tool, for example, whereas others wouldn't dream of ever using the Pen tool! Some will use non-destructive editing, whereas others are quite happy to hack at their original image with the Eraser. You see the problem.

You could have a go at Medhi's plugins. The Eraser Classic and the Geniune Eraser. If it a simple colour background to remove this might help. not the complete answer, but sometimes helpful.
