Wow - that's a big question! I would guess that there are probably more ways to do that than almost anything else in Photoshop. The thing is that the Photoshop toolbox (and by "toolbox" I mean the various plugins, filters etc. that are available as well as the standard Tools) is not like a mechanic's or carpenter's toolbox, in that you only use certain tools for certain jobs. For example, if you want to knock in a nail you would use a hammer, not a screwdriver, because that's the tool designed for the job. In Photoshop, not only can you use the same tool to do lots of different jobs, but you can also do the same basic job with lots of different tools. Confused? You will be!
The upshot of this is, for the specific question you have asked, you need to analyse your starting image and then decide on the best tool for the job because the way that you remove a background from an image will vary according to the image. Also, different Photoshop users will approach the same image in different ways - some people will always reach for the Pen tool, for example, whereas others wouldn't dream of
ever using the Pen tool! Some will use non-destructive editing, whereas others are quite happy to hack at their original image with the Eraser. You see the problem.
