Lace Pattern, turning down the back color..

Ok, so I have attached the picture I am trying to explain. This will be a 1024x768 image, a background for my clients site, but i want to take out the dark dull reddish color in the back and keep the white swirlish stuff and tint it a gradient, how can I do this? when I go to hit bevel and emboss nothing works because its a pattern ive downloaded. I havent tried desaturating it but idk if that would work ill try a few more things but does anyone know how I can accomplish this? thanks

Put it on a layer (if it isn't already), then use either the Magic Wand tool or Select > Color Range... to select the rose colour. Once selected, hit Delete to remove, leaving just the flower pattern. Deselect, and then you can then apply any layer style you want.

You can also try this:

Desaturate the image - change the layer to Overlay
Create a new layer below and fill it with your gradient

You can play with curves or levels to darken the gray background.
