The question is: Who are you making this site for - yourself, or your visitors? Black text on a dark grey background (or white text on a light background) is a fundamental design flaw - hard enough for someone with good eyesight to read comfortably, but darn near impossible for someone whose vision isn't 20/20. Maybe you can't do much about the speed of the site, but you can improve its accessibility. The fact is that if your visitors have to wait longer than usual for the site to load, and
then when it's finally loaded it's almost impossible to read, they're just going to click away to somewhere else.
You don't need a "cooler" font - just a more readable one. Serif fonts are ideal for printed text, but computer monitors don't render serif fonts so well, which is why (as Mike pointed out) most websites use sans serif fonts like Arial or Verdana (which was, I believe, developed especially for use on computers). If you check out Mike's website, you'll see he knows what he's talking about.
