Greyscale

I need help, every time I try to select a colour for example, red; photoshop coverts it into its equivelant(sp?) in grayscale. A dark red would become a dark grey and a light red would become a light grey. So I can't select any colour that is outside the greyscale. I have made sure that the file is in bitmap mode but photoshop seems to idnore this.

Are you using a layer mask? If you are, and you have the layer mask selected (rather than the image on the layer), you will only get different shades of grey in the foreground/background colour chips (because you can only paint on a mask in greyscale).

So how did you solve it? Other people may have the same problem and any extra knowledge is always useful.
