Hello, newbie with a question.

Hey everyone. Just like to say that i'm loving the site so far.

Just one question.. what the heck is a slice? and how can i use it to my advantage? I like to create custom logos and designs for items i sell on my website but i have no idea what a 'slice' is in photoshop. I have tried to use it? lol

Thanks again,
Chris

When people say "slice" they are referring to slicing up your design into sections. These sections would then be put back together when you code the page. So for example, I would slice the top section of my design and call it my header. I would slice the very bottom section of my design and call it my footer. Photoshop comes with ImageReady which is the program I use most often to "slice" my designs.

jacorre thanks for the reply.

So this is mainly used for web design? what are some practical uses for this application? can you give an example of how specifically it would be used? or anyone else for that matter.

thanks

I can't think of any other occasion where you'd use it. The idea is that a single big image in a web page can take a long time to load over a slow connection, so if you slice it up into a bunch of small images each one (and consequently the large image that they go to make up) will load much quicker.

The other popular use for ImageReady is for small animations. You can use it's animation panel to create small animations.
