Just a word of caution if anybody is using Free Images for Professional use...
If the place you get the image from does not have a licensing agreement with the copyright owner (usually the photog.) then they have no permission to grant you the right to use that image.
So, even though you think you're getting an image from a site that says they are "Free Images"... you run the risk of getting sued by the Copyright Owner.
To further complicate the issue, if a photographer simply uploads an image to a "Free Photo" site without signing a licensing agreement, the likely retain the rights to the photo... meaning they can seek retroactive fees for the use of the image as well as demand that you stop using the image. (More commonly, they just work out a simple fee for continued use but you get the point)
Just consider this when sourcing photo's for professional projects. You could end up with a lot more hassles and expenses than you bargained for...
Make sure the site offering the images is legit, and has lawful permission to license the images.
Mike.

Yes... I have read Morguefile's terms and conditions...
The problem is: What happens when someone downloads an image from Masterfile (for example) and pays the royalty free or rights-managed fees and then either intentionally, or by mistake, uploads that same image to MorgueFile?
Now you have an image that the artist intends to maintain control over being freely distributed as "Free". MorgueFile stating that the images are free does not revoke the artists rights to claim copyright over their image, and they are therefore within their legal rights to seek restitution for the use of their property.
Furthermore, if the image contains the likeness of people, then a model release must be on file for each explicit use of the photo... This is important where parents use their children or other family members or friends as models and then submit their photos to a site such as MorgueFile without consideration for how they might be used. How would a child (let alone the parent) feel if their image or likeness was used in some legal but controversial manner?
I'm not saying these problems are rampant, but as a part of a graphic design firm that has more than 30 years experience, I can tell you that they do occur...
I'm just saying, be careful, and consider the source of the photos you use in professional advertising pieces.
Mike.

You are right...royalty free images does not meen they are totally free.
In most cases they have restrictions like number of printed copys, web usage and so on. Before download an image we must read the legal documentation that is diferent from website to website.
In some websites they offer a "free image" every week if you subscrive but even that free image sometimes have restrictions.

I've been searching through stock.xchng for a while now.
stock.xchng - the leading free stock photography site
They're a free membership site with photos ranging from totally restricted to for free - no restriction uploaded by users. They have an advanced search tool where you can specify Restricted OK - Yes, No or partly.
If you search No the majority of images come up with the notifications "Usage Royalty free, no restrictions", and, "Restrictions: There are no usage restrictions for this photo."
However I will usually check the profile of the uploader to make sure they took the photo and if there are any additional notes like "I would love to know if you use my photo!" or "Please comment and critique me, so I can take better pictures. And I would be happy to know how my pictures are used." and I try to make sure I note this down and return a reply to them so they are happy and uploading many more photos free of restriction. There's also a rating system and comment area which is only polite to use since they are supplying material freely.
Additionally there is a Restriction Free Stock Exchange Club! user blog that lists many of the uploaders who grant free use on their photos.
stock.xchng - a51media's blog - Restriction Free Stock Exchange Club!
Anyway, I hope this is is of some use.

Just wanted to add that if stock.xchng doesn't have what I need I'll take a stab at Yotophoto | Find free photos... fast!.
They search several different sources of restriction-free, Public Domain or images that are released under generous Creative Commons, GNU FDL or similar licenses. These sites include yotophoto.com, sxc.hu, Flickr, Wikipedia Commons, Morguefile, ImageAfter, Stockcache, etc.
Cheers!
