Brushes - You make new layers and keep changing the color.. think thats what you mean.. instead of just using only one layer for all your brushes when you want them different color for each brush you use.. right? you use one brush, new layer, change color second brush.. and so on..

As for the background, fade the opacity or the fill. Thats all I can think of. Or mess with the blending options.. instead of normal theres a whole list you can choose from.. in your layers palette at the top leftish corner theres a long drop down menu and the first choice is normal and then so on. Easiest way I use it is highlight normal and just use the arrow keys which will change your layout or graphic to whatever you choose.. that might not be what your looking for but something to try out I think your looking for the opacity to go down.. that control is in your layers palette to the top right.. hope that helped..

There is an option to make the brush use various colors, based on the foreground and background colors you have selected, but it only changes color for each instance that the brush is stamped. Each stamp will be a solid color but, if you hold down the mouse button and draw with it, it will change colors each time. This isn't what you're looking for, though. I don't believe that it's possible to make a brush use multiple colors at once.

That doesn't mean that there aren't other ways around it. You can stamp your brush on it's own transparent layer, then hold CTRL and click on the layer thumbnail (v. CS2) or the layer name (previous versions) to get a selection based on that brush's shape. Next, go to Filter > Render > Clouds and it will fill the selected area with variations of the colors you have set as fore- and background. (You can hold CTRL and tap the " F " key to redo it until you like what you see). Re-select it and click the half-black, half-white circle icon, at the bottom of the Layers Palette, to Add an Adjustment Layer, and choose Gradient Map. Double click the gradient box in the dialog that appears to choose different gradient variations or create your own.

As for the text, you could try adding a Style, ---(by clicking the button with the " f " in it, at the bottom of the Layers Palette), such as Stroke, Drop Shadow or Outer Glow, then, at the top of the Layers Palette, reduce the fill Opacity to make the letters disappear while leaving just the effects.

In the design you pointed, the colours are not given by the brushes. The brushes are all white.
They lie on a coloured background or have tri-coloured layers above using one of the blending modes.
Create a new layer, name it pink, paint the pink area with a large normal brush.
Do the same for the other two colors. Add gaussian blur to each one of them, tweak opacity.
Create another layer above those to paint with your brushes, in white and drop opacity. keep doing this until your satisfied.
Hope I helped, and good luck.

Would it be possible to put a gradient layer style on the layer the brush is used on, then try different layer blends?

Sure is possible. Using layer styles on a painted layer only affects the painted areas, leaving transparent areas free.
