Instead of manually doing it yourself, you can use layer styles to add drop shadows, inner shadows, etc. To apply a layer style you can double click on a layer in the Layers palette and the different options will appear. Or you can click on the little icon at the bottom of the layers palette and choose a layer style that way.

You don't really need a tutorial to get your head round Layer Styles - the best way to learn about them is to experiment.
Just create a new image, create a new layer, then put something on it - add some text or draw a shape with the Shape tool. Next, click on the Add a layer style button at the bottom of the Layers palette and select one that you want to try out. The Layer Style dialog will open - make sure that Preview is selected, then move the dialog so that you can see the effects on your object. Play around with the settings. Click on one of the other Layer Styles listed in the left-hand pane of the dialog, and observe the effect of changing its settings. Try combining two or more Layer Styles (just click in the check boxes to enable them, or clear the check boxes to turn them off). Try applying a ready-made Layer Style, then open the Layer Styles dialog (double-click on the f icon) and examine how the style has been constructed.

Another option could be to simply add one of the pre-made Styles, by clicking on the Styles tab, in the same pallete well as the color picker (or click Window > Styles, if it's not visible).
You can click on any of the little boxes in the Styles pallete and the style will be applied. Once you've found one you like, you should notice a little black circle with a white " f " inside of it to the right of the layer's name, in the Layers pallete. Double-click that and the dialog box will open, at which point you can study how that particular style was created.

I adore premade styles, I have tons of them. I find them useful when I know what I want but I can't create it on my own.
