Looking for a Layer Style

I am looking for an effect, I can't seem to get it though.. so maybe someone here can be of help.

The effect I am looking for is almost like when you look at the side of a sword, how you can see the center spline and the metal reflects differently from it.

Is there any way it can be achieved in Photoshop! Thanks for the help.

Hmmmm.... Personally I see two ways of doing this:

1. Define the sword shape as two separate objects (i.e. the upper and lower side of the blade). Then add gradient layer effects to both objects, making sure that the gradients lead away from each other.

2. Create a metal effect using layer effects that is not smoothed any way. This will lead to a sharp edge that could resemble a blade edge.... with a lot of fiddling. You'll get artifacts around the sloping edge, though, that will probably need manual alteration later. To understand what i'm talking about just look at the sharp edges in the small letters in RoboUK's metal embossing tutorial here.

Glad to help m8. I'd go for the first option myself - it gives you more overall control over the end result (even though its fiddly to make alterations later).

I look forwards to seeing the results!

A very nice little effect you have there. It just goes to prove how powerful Photoshop layer effects can be in the right hands! Keep up the good work!
