custom canvas shape?

i dunno what it's called, but that is what i would describe it as.

i saw an example in somebody's sig..

how do you do that? lol, it might be a really easy action, but i've only taught myself on photoshop, and can work relatively fast and accurately on it; but i don't know a lot about the more complex of tasks.

i can kind of fumble my way through this, but i can't make it equal at either side.

anyone show me how to do this?

Ahhh, its a PNG image with transparency. Use imageready and make yourself familiar with the transparency options and it becomes MUCH easier.

open up a new file and click on the transparent option, you should then get a grey and white checker board canvas. just draw on that and save it as a .png file and whatever parts on the canvas are not drawn on become transparent.

Anyone able to tell me what the advantage to using a .png file over say a .gif file is seeing as both allow you to use transparency?

doesnt saving a pic in a .gif file reduce its quality slightly?

i dont really know, ive only ever used .png, but all the .gif files i find on google seem to be low quality to me.

It really depends on the settings you save a gif file under. The more colors and better diffusion you use, the larger and better quality the image. I'll have to try that .png format though, I've only ever used the transparent .gifs.

PNG supports lossless compression and up to 48-bit true colour or 16-bit greyscale. GIF only supports up to 256 colours.

Have a look here for more details: http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/pngintro.html
