Just to get in on this conversation, I'll tell you what I read somewhere on this subject:
Abobe have little interest in the guy (or girl) sitting in front of their computers coloring their anime drawings. Their interest is geared more towards the company that'll purchase one copy for $600, then put it on a hundred computers - all of which are being used to make the company money. I suppose that even an individual who makes money with a pirated copy of the software could be under Adobe's scrutiny. It simply wouldn't be cost-effective to try to track down every individual, though. First, they would have to pay someone to try to prove you even have Photoshop (you could come in here talking Photoshop all day and actually be using TheGIMP - which wouldn't be a bad thing), then prove it's illegal, then get their $600 an hour corporate lawyers involved.
All-in-all, I'd say it really doesn't matter much, here.
