Essentially what the shapes do as default, is draw a path, which then shows up in the Paths container. If you want to actually draw the rectangle, you should select an active layer in the layers container, then pop over to the shapes container, right click on the path you've made, and FILL the path with a colour/gradient/whatever. That should do it for you. Lord only knows why Adobe had to make shapes so irritating by default...

Simple problem, easy fix.

In the Window menu (top) click > Layers

That will bring up the layers pallette.

When you work on a specific layer make sure you click that layer, or else you may be working on a different layer but the screen is showing the other.

If that isn't the problem reply and I could try to help you more.

I guess it's more flexible this way. But yes it is irritating.

When you use the shape tool in PS7 it does create a new layer but I wouldn't class that as being a bad thing at all - to change the fill colour for the shape you just created double click the little box on the left of the layer (in your layers pallete) this then brings up the colour picker, pick your colour and it fills the shape for you.

The one thing that really bugs me about the paths/shapes is the stupid line photoshop insists on putting around the path when you have the layer selected, i find it really off-putting
