There's no templates per-se. If you design in a high enough resolution (or, even better, in vector), then any printer can take your design and rescale it to fit in an appropriate place on your clothing item. Places like cafepress have tools that allow precise placement on mock t-shirts, etc - its really quite easy...

What I do usually is make a mock of the T-shirt shape, then apply my art to is so the printer gets an idea of the placement. Then I give them the high res files for them to use in screenprinting.

One thing to think about...if your art has a ton of colors the screenprint could come out thick like a bullet-proof vest...you know those shirts that make your chest sweat? That's why. Screenprinters generally put a base on a tee before applying color so that the color doesn't fade. You can ask them about leaving the base off if you'd like the actual printing process to help you out with an antique look. The color might be a little dull, but it can come out with some rad results.

You might be best off doing the shirts in Illustrator, or some other vector program. That way the resolution will look a great deal better.

Question designing patterns for plush toys with Vector based software

Hello,

This is my first post on Biorust, so it will be very newbie-like :-)

Anyway, I wanted to report that I tried designing patterns to make plush toys using Fireworks (I don't know if Photoshop is precise enough with the positionning and measurements to do this kind of things...)

It is difficult designing a pattern that will be sewed in volume and stuffed...
My results weren't very good, then I had to resort to designing on cloth, and actually MAKING/SEWING test toys. The vector based shapes weren't much help.

Maybe it would be easier to do it in a 3D environment, but then could the shapes be flattened and printed out with precise measures ?

If anybody experimented with this, it would be nice for me to discuss it.

Hmmmm. Now this is definately *NOT* my field, but Photoshop has some pretty heavy-duty calibration tools, and can easily enable precise placing with the use of rulers and 'snap-on' measurement points. It may be suitable for your needs, but beyond that I'm afraid that you may need to use a CAD tool for really high-precision work (such as AutoCAD). They aren't designed for overly arty stuff and are very expensive... but hey, you can organize your work down to the nanometer and it nearly always comes out as you intended!
