Can somebody tell me, what is the usage of Layer Combs in photoshop?

I don't think I've ever seen layer combs myself! Where did you find them?

I sure do! Layer comps are simply a way of saving different states of a file. If, for example, you want to work on something really complex and want to save whilst doing that... but still want to go back if you find out that your new ideas don't pan out, then you can create a snapshot of the PSD and just go back to it later. It tends to make files absolutely HUGE, but its a nice feature and saves you from the terror of creating multiple files.

If you need a description from the horse's mouth, then Adobe themselves have a nice visual analysis of layer comps over at http://www.adobe.com/tips/phs8lyrcomp/main.html
