Illustrator..

I didnt want to post this in the general section because it is a graphics program.. but anyways.. so its my first time using illustrator. I want to make a christmas tree.. the one that looks neat to make is built in illustrator.. so I got up to the part where i drew it with the pen tool.. but now.. i have to fill it with a gradient and its not like PS, i think. Ive tried to choose a color and it wont let me choose a color.. its only black and white.. anyone know how i can change this.. I used the help topics, did a search and nothing.. I dont know if its the controls of my illustrator but im going to check it out more.. thanks to any who replys..

If you look to the bottom of the tools palette you will see two color swatches... or at least you THINK they are color. Unlike Photoshop, these two swatces are outline color and fill color/pattern respectively. Just click on them with your object selected (not individual control points) and you'll be able to set them as you please... I think...

what version are you using?
regardless, you have a gradient pallette (if you canna find it window /gradient), just like colour or whatever, click on the little box for the inside of the shape rather than the stroke one, then click on the gradient box. you can adjust the amount of gradient etc there too. and for more colours open up the swatches and drag the colour you want onto it. I'm only very novice at illustrator btw
