Question Layer Styles

Photoshop CS

Is it possible to apply a style to a layer and somehow 'glue' it so if I erase part of the layer, the style doesn't conform to it?
For example. I create a new layer with a big round black dot in the middle. I apply a style that includes a bevel. Say I want to, for example, erase the center of the dot without the bevel being applied to the erased area.
Is this possible?

Thanks. I've been using work-arounds, but was hoping there was some secret club handshake way to flatten the style to the transparent layer.

I didn't say that right. The layer is transparent, the black dot in the center is 100%. I want the dot to be like a donut but only have the bevel on the outside edge.

i can't see anyway of doing what you want.
I'd probably mask it, so it looks like you're looking through the hole. or put something else on top.

Thanks all. I was afraid that this would be the case. Would be nice to be able to do though. Oh well, back to the ol' work-arounds. Thanks for your help!

Smile Bevel only on outside of donut

Greetings,
Try the 'Round Button' in Filter Factory A. It wil only put the bevel on the outside of the torus. The only problem is that it casts a shadow on one side that can be adjusted with the Light slider.

Try using R1=202, R2=235 as a place to start. I created a filled circular selection and then cut out the middle. Then run the filter. You can get the free Filter Factory sets here >> http://stevesdesktopphotography.com/plugins.htm

I think she was just stating a hypothetical example, what she really means is, whether you can apply a Layer Style to only PART of a layer. As far as I can see, there's no way around THAT problem.

Thanks for your help. I don't have Filter Factory (will have to look into it though).
Maybe Photoshop CSXXI due out in 2045 will be able to do this. LOL

duplicate layer and mask

As NeoLokie mentioned, another possibility, though hardly one click but pretty easy and very powerful, is the use of duplicate layers and masks. Make two layers of the same picture and apply the style to the top one. Then put a mask on the top layer, hold down the ALT key and click on the mask (little white square to the right of the layer fingernail. You can color the mask black to hide the effect on the top layer and let the lower unaffected layer show through. Remember that white on the masking layer gives you the actual picture on that layer. Black hides that top picture and lets the next layer show through. Gray is semitransparant. You can apply gradients to make smooth transitions. You can use the Marquee tools to select specific areas. If you select the picture thumbnail so that it shows and then select the mask you can color in the mask with a painting tool but will see the affect on the combined image so you can see the effects as you go. Pretty powerful stuff. This is probably the way you want to go (if you aren't already)

Hope that this helps.
