I'm never a fan of big black open spaces... but it actually looks really nice in this wallpaper, and leaves lots of space for icons on the left. Good stuff!

I've used Cinema 4D for the "tentacles" and I've retouched it with Photoshop 7, giving the colours and some effects.

I work on cinema 4d one day (2hours) and then, the days after (1 or 2 hours, I forgot) with photoshop.
