Help: Cannot Paint An Image After Bevel And Emboss?

I just created a button and i used the bevel and emboss effect. However i want the left side of the image to be completely black and only the the top to have that effect. I tried painting it but it doesnt work. What should i do? Here is an image below.

Ok, so if I understand you correctly, the left side should be black, and the emboss effect should be at the top? Paint the image correctly before embossing it, then when you do, change the angle so that it's coming from the top.

Layer effects occur on top of your image, so if you have lots of effects your image may be totally obscured. Xdeath5's advice is good - make sure your image is looking good BEFORE adding the layer effects. If this doesnt work, you may try overlaying layers ontop of your image, but this gets messy and confusing really quickly!
