Rounded Rectangulars...and I do this how?
With no hard corners, I would like to make a rectangle with rounded off edges...preferably nothing freehand

Below the Text Type Tool there is a box with the tools: Rectangle Tool, Rounded Rectangle Tool, Ellipse Tool, Polygon Tool, Line Tool, and Custom Shape Tool.
Choose the Rounded Rectangle tool.
That's the easiest way.

LOL!
I forgot all about that, I was using the select tool for this particular project, that is why i asked the question.
With a little more experimentation, what i'm doing is still possible with the pre-selected shape tool, I should be alright. Thanks.

Another way is to just create a simple rectangle in its own layer with the rectangular marquee and fill tools, and then run through the
antialiasing tutorial
to round out the edges.

Well, it gives you more control and the ability to make complex shapes... although that does come at the expense of complexity.... but not much though...

I know ... I was going to say that. But I thought it might be a little too complicated. If what I told him couldn't do the job that was the next idea.

There is an easy way to make a rounded rectangle then cut your photo to match the rectangle or mat.
1. get a photo that you would like to cut into a rectangle
2. get the rounded rectangle tool from under the shape menu
3. make sure you have fill selected on the options bar.
4. create a new layer
5. set the radius on the options bar. if you set to zero you will have a rectangle with sharp corners. Or you can set to any degree you like 45 to 75 is generally a good number. The radius determines how rounded your corners will be.
6. Draw a rectangle and using the free transform make your rounded rectangle just slightly smaller than the photo.
7. Duplicate this layer, flood fill to color of choice and put a filter on if desired
8 place the photo you wish to cut behind the first rectangle and make sure the top solid rectangle is on top and slightly smaller than the photo
9. With the 1 rectangle selected in the layers pallett go to seledt>load selection. You should then see the marching ants around the rectangle
10 Now select the photo layer
11 Go to select and inverse
12. hit delete and the bottom photo will be cut with rounded corners
13. Wink off the top rounded rectangle
14. move the photo onto the second colored rectangle.
15 Use the free transform to make the second rectangle slightly larger than the photo
You know have a rounded rectangle and mat that have the same radius for the corners
