Its quite easy to explain by stating what they are NOT. Quite simply, all computer graphics are either raster or vector....

Raster graphics are what you have probably been dealing with up to this point. In this form, the graphic is made up of small units (pixels), which fit together to form a bigger picture. The benefits of this form include ease of use and supreme flexibility, but resizing the image is always difficult, and can leave you with a distorted look.

Vector graphics are a totally different type of graphics in which objects are created using points and lines, which relate to each other mathematically. Vectors are quite flexible in themselves (especially when using a decent vector graphics program such as Adobe Illustrator), but making tiny changes is very difficult, and normally requires that you overlay a seperate smaller vector object. Because vectors are mathematically defined, they can be distorted and resized with no loss to quality at all.

Man1c hit it on the dot, although I cannot stress enough when s/he said about mathematics. That it's all about math.

No loss of quality, just overly frustrating...
