HD failure... that's why we have backups (or we should have backups in place... CD's, DVD's, additional drives)
deleting items linked only means you can't use the item you deleted in the linked file... doesn't cripple whole file
more programs than InDesign link files... Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Dreamweaver, After Effects etc.... CS apps were designed to work together and establishing links is one of the ways to take advantage of this... You can use "place" for instance to pull a CS3 illustrator vector art image into Photoshop CS3 and keep it vector as smart object. Then add all types of bitmap stuff in Photoshop CS3 to it... decide you need change in vector art... double click the smart object and it will take you back to Illustrator to edit the original file you "placed" into Photoshop. Save it and then back to
PS you go with new vector. Organization and proper archiving will help a lot with taking advantage of things like this

I used indesign because in indesign you pretty much only link stuff.
