Red face Snow Shots any tips for better photos?

Today we had a decent snow storm followed by ice. I want to get out there in the morning to take some pictures of the ice in the snow. In my old Kodak camera I just set the camera to snow and it compenstated for the brightness of the snow. Now I Have a Cannon Rebel XT. Can someone give me some tips on how to shoot snow pictures with the right white balance, or exposure adjustments? Do you shoot differently when it is cloudy out compared to sunny? I went for a walk last weekend in the snow and really washed out some shots that might have been really pretty. I shoot in the RAW format in the creative modes. Thanks. I can't wait for the sun to come out tomorrow. Nanc
