It is very common for me to have Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Internet Explorer, Firefox, and World of Warcraft all running at the same time with absolutely no hiccups...
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on a Core2Duo with 4GB of Ram and my install of the Adobe CS3 suite was clean... no beta... but a lot of people try stuffing Vista onto a system designed for Windows 98 with 2GB of Ram or less and then wonder why they have problems with it.
Vista is an excellent system if you give it the resources it needs... if Windows 98 is pushing your system to the limit, don't expect Vista to improve anything.
Please note that I am about as anti-microsoft as it gets... but credit where it's due... Vista is the only MS-OS that hasn't given me grief.

4gb ram is big enough to support the stupid rotating circle of Vista.
