I'm sorry, I must be very confused...
we are both saying correct things, but to do two different actions. To me the question isn't clear enough for my little brain.
Tamlin, you are talking about creating "selection masks", basically selecting the "alpha" of that particular layer that you have selected, correct? and it's true, they switched the way you can do it. You now have to ctrl+click on the layer's thumbnail to do this as apposed to just ctrl+clicking on any part of the layer in the layer manager.
I am talking about actually selecting the layer itself. I was assuming bblacj was talking about being able to just control/click on the canvas to select the layer as a whole.
With the move tool selected, you can ctrl+ click on a layer on the canvas and it will select that layer (but without creating a selection mask). It's almost like choosing the "auto select layer" option for the move tool. but without having it on at all times.
anyways, I'm probably confused and answered correctly, just to the wrong question.
