they didn't.
in cs3 I can still select the layer, by holding down ctrl+ left mouse clicking on the layer on the canvas, and it selects ti for me., maybe double check your shortcut keys to make sure you have the defaults loaded up...
bblacj: i know this might sound dumb, but make sure you don't have those layers locked.
