possibly begin at step 5 thats how I made the smoky enviorment in my pool room pic (see my gallery)
I also achieved some moderate luck with following that tutorial from step 5 on a blank canvas (but after the clouds filter, i added 3 difference dlud filters over one another) and then flattening the image, selecting the non cloud area with a magic wand, selecting inverse, adding a bevel/emboss effect, then reselecting the non cloud area, selecting inverse again, new layer via cut, and then dragging and droping onto my image and using transform>scale to get everything the right size. finally ending by erasing the edge clouds and some that i didn't like and using a SLIGHT gaussian blur to fog the edges a bit

It looks a bit cartoony but its a thought.
