That last link is quite interesting, and is a good example of how some photo-retouchers think that LAB mode is mainly used for sharpening - if you're changing to LAB anyway to do your sharpening, why not do the colour-correction there too? As Dan Margulis points out, LAB colour-correction isn't a cure-all for every photograph but with an image like the one shown, it would offer far more control (and be a lot quicker) than faffing about with channels and luminosity in RGB mode. You could even reduce the noise in LAB, too.

Sorry, I'm starting to sound a bit evangelical about LAB mode. I'll get my coat...
