once you are done the live trace, I usually hit the "expand" button at the top toolbar,

then you go ahead, and run a "smooth" on the lines that you find are rough...this should clean up some excess bumps in the lines...


once you are done this process, you will have to go ahead and manually tweak your lines, to smooth them out.

work with the "convert" tool to get the bezier handles to either disappear or show up. If you have the bezier handles out, then you can play with the handles to help smooth the curve and change it's shape and weight.

I don't have a lot of time right now to fully explain every tool, but if this helps then good, if not, I'll come back later on monday to explain it a little more in detail.
