As a max artist myself would be... First go through the help files and resoerce files. under help in the program Read the introduction and tutorials. Also look on CD3 for more tutorials and stuff... After you got the basics out the way spend a week just pissing about. Dont try to model anything in perticuler make a mess just use every tool you see and look out how it works. Also some advice try and stick to using Poly Edit its far better than mesh edit. Better tools and controles.

One last thing. Be patiant. Iv been learning and continue to learn 3D [and max in my case] For the last 6 years. And Im only just starting to become a professional modeler. I have only seen a few people pick up a 3d program and have no previous exsperience of 3d and master it within a year or two.

Its a little down hearting but those people tend to be fine artists with degrees.

If you really want to become a professional learn an oposit 3d program.

For isntance some programs have trates and modeling techneeks that are simuler.
Max and Maya have very simuler modeling styles. So if your a max user when you get some time to have a go at Lightwave witch has more in common with XSI than maya. That way when your asked to use another program for a job when you learn it you do a better job of learning it

Its somthing i havnt done and I really wish i did.

Learning a second oposit 3d program early on while your learning your main one its alot easyer. Than if you where trying to learn it after many years of using one program.

Anyway read help files do tutorials and look online for resorces more than anything dont stop. Keep at it. Do alot.

Ocationing you will get burnt out on days like that go take a bike ride. Have a few days away from the computer and youll soon be getting ichy modeling finders and have the will to work again

Good, but there's tutorials for 3D Studio MAX inside the REFERENCE FILES.
If you plan on a long time commitment, I suggest an upgrade, as MAX 8 happens to be the most stable version of MAX on the earth. With some neat extras, too.

You can try polygonal modelling, but that's where Lightwave is good at. It has lots and lots and lots of room for modelling manuvering, but it's HARD to learn, and you don't wanna spend $800 for a feature MAX has.
Besides that, there's NURBS and Subdivisional modelling. I'm very poor at both, and I've virtually NOT used subdivisional before, but it's kinda a cross between polygonal and NURBS modelling- you switch between layers.

And for help files, I think MAX has an awsome one, Maya too, C4D- WHY is a reference manual substituting a help file?
Lightwave- I suggest you go for a course and rather NOT use the help file. It's way too messy.

I think all apps are as easy to use as another, just the RESULTS made by them differ. C4D is "easy" because it's very easy to make a nice image, while in MAX, Maya and LW (especially LW) you have to have some base knowledge.

(sorry for the caps; I'm used to extensive emphasis)

Oh, and I forgot, there are pretty much tutorials for MAX on DeviantART.
While most of them are for abstracts, it's where you can start to makke a very firm grip on MAX skills.
DON'T read articles. You'll kill yourself (literally) confusing yourself. Doing it is much more fun, and makes you feel a lot more proud of yourself.
