Rigging and Animation

Hey guys, I have a doubt... Is there any future for rigging and animation as we can see the concept of motion capture and laser scanning is playing the part of rigger and animator.. Your views please.

Well, motion capture will never replace animators. as you will still need animators to tweak and tidy up the mo-cap files, as well as the acting itself. Even though mo-cap is still improving you will never be able to replace an animator.

As far as rigging goes, you will ALWAYS need to transfer the data from the mo-cap file to the 3d model somehow, this is done with bones/skeleton within the model, and even though you can procedurally create bones now with scripts and programs, nearly every situation is different (on a by project basis) and therefore will need riggers to setup rigs to accommodate the situation.

As for replacing modellers with laser scanners, it will never happen. yes, it's being used but only to mimic actors faces, etc as you are reproducing them in a 3d environment either for a stunt or for something that is not possible to do in real life. but you will need a modelling artist to clean up the model after the scan is done, much like you need an animator to clean up mo-cap.

I hope this helps or answers your question.

I think rigging is still valuable. Not everyone can afford motion capture.
