Hey there. Well, this is the major problem with the custom 3d packages out there: they are not for free. Maya does have a "learning edition" with limited options kicking around or you can download a 30 day working trial at Autodesk - Design Innovation. But if you are looking for a truly free 3D package to implement into your pipeline you probably want to check out Blender which is open source and as free as it gets. It will run best on Windows XP or Vista with at least 2 gigs of RAM and 2.4 or higher processor. But again it depends on how deep you want to go.
if you are doing commercial work, then i would suggest purchasing the software, but if that's just not in the budget, then try the open source software called blender, it's free and can really do some great things. blender.org - Home

and maybe you can make enough money to buy some autodesk product later on though when used to blender it can do terrific things! But im not used to it so....all questions to agentxi
