Maya error

I am upgrading my PC to vista ( Even though its not ready, I know!) But my Laptop runs Vista (standart) and if I want to get them on the same network, they both need vista(crappy OS!). Because of that I am "upgrading" my PC to vista.

Now I had this very strange error coming out of Maya, it simply stated that maya couldnt save an file, and that the Maya would shut down.

The strange part is that maya runs normally, no errors, as long as I dont touch anything related to rendering or texturing. Now this is okay for a start, as I dont need to render anything now, but its ****ty that maya doesnt fully work!

Its the same Maya (2008/7) that Ive been running on XP sp2 for some years, and I didnt have any problems there!

Now to make a long story short, does anyone know anything about these crashes? Or had the same problem? I know that this isnt a Maya forum, but I thought I could give it a try anyway....

Hi Unleash,
I know nothing about Maya and very little about Vista, but I've heard some people have had problems such as yours that were related to running 64-bit Maya on 64-bit Vista. Is this the same setup you've got?

My PC is running Vista 32 home premium, way cheaper than 64x or business

My Specs are:
Intel quad core 2,5gHz at 1066
4GB DDR2-8500 memory
Asus P5E Mobo with an FSB of 1066
Graphics card: Club3D HD 3800
HardDisks: maxtor 500GB raptor 40GB

So that shouldn't be the problem....right?

The error is really strange as it reports that maya cant write to a file(or save to a file). This error occurs when I want to change the color of an object, or want to switch to mental ray redering mode. It also happens when adding a texture to an object or anything related to the hypershader.

The strange part is, is that the file that maya wants to write to is there, and that maya has clearance to write files there....

My thought is that Vista is blocking the writing of maya, and "forgets" to ask permission to give permission....(Vista....).

AgentXI: I searched for that kind of thing, but I really cant find anything good that I understand. They are al talking about emulators and stuff....But I want to be able to put XP on HDD2 and Vista on HDD1. So that I only have to change the boot order to load either Vista or XP....is such a thing possible or not?

your system seems to be good enough for vista and running other apps...

i'm not sure about compatibility with your video card, but if it's worked before, then I wouldn't concern yourself about it.

I found an article that i THINK talks about the same issue you are having... he mentioned about changing the main permissions and accessibility within vista and it now works...

here's the link

Thanks, but I cant find a solution there....it just says that that was one of the problems.

I will try to find that Vista permission thingy, and how to change it. Thanks already! I hope this works out, if not, well than I will just have to go back to XP (maybe thats for the best)

Hey Unleash,

I found this article The Area | Maya crashes everytime i try to save a file in Maya 2008 on Windows Vista HP

also, if you are considering downgrading to xp, make sure you don't install service pack 3, it is totally messed up, especially if you have integrated soundcard , it messed with the realtek drivers...

Well today I decided to give it one more try, and then I would instal XP sp2.

So I uninstalled all the maya features, completely cleared out all maya folders. Did a registery check, so that nothing would stay behind. And installed maya again, and guess what? It worked. The renderer works!

I must have missed an artefact or something alike, as maya still thinks it is installed on my "D:\" directory, while it is on my "C:\" directory. This gives some problems when loading in mental ray and such. So I wanted to know if you guys might know a workaround for that....

not exactly sure what you are needing?

does the plugin not load anymore?

did you try and activate it in the plugin manager within maya?

if you have and it's still failing, then try and look up a mental ray loading file located in the following...

C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2008\mentalray

open the maya.rayrc file with wordpad and specify which directory your mental ray is...

hope this helps ... if not, give us some more details about the issue...

Thanks agentxi,

Im sorry that I was a bit unclear, the problem is/ was that maya tries to load in mentalray from my D drive, but I installed it on my C drive, so I have to tell maya the new path to the file.

so thanks, im going to try that one later...

Okay this is really strange!

The path in the maya.rayrc is good, and mental ray does start up when my maya starts up. So no problems there. But when I want to render something in MR maya gives me the error that "mi_openexr.dll" cant be found. But im currently staring at that file, in the right directory.

Whats going on? Is the file corrupted what do you think?
