There seem to be plenty of books available, too:

Amazon.com: 3d studio max: Books

Not cheap, though.

I started with "Teach yourself Photoshop". After your finished with it you should have a very good understanding of layers, selecting, and how to use most of the tools. The rest is up to you and your imagination. Have fun

Nice links there, Tablet205!

I've moved this thread to the 3D Modelling forum, so hopefully there will be no more confusion.

Hey, I know that its a pretty known site...
but I find most of my tuts on pixel2life or from this site:
3DXO - Tutorials - 3D Studio Max - Tutorials, Guides & Workshops for Autodesk’s (Discreet) 3D Studio Max

I use Maya myself so I can't really say which of those tuts are good, but thay might be handy anyway!

there's also a lot of other sites, like TutorialOutpost - Photoshop Tutorials, Flash Tutorials, Illustrator Tutorials, and more! for example. There's a bunch of quite simple 3D Studio MAX tutorials for beginners there ^^
