Help with Blender Lighting

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have had Blender for a few months but just starting learning the animation process etc... a few days ago, but I have little problem with the sun lamp. It lights up the scene the properly but the back of the objects that are facing the objects go completely black. Is there a way to fix this so you can still see the colour but it's just darker? Thank you.

This may sound like a silly question but, is your camera on one of the active layers? If not, shift-select the layer that the camera is on to include it with the rendering.

Also, the Sun lamp is a directional light so, you may have to use it in conjunction with other lights to get the desired effects.

This might help: Manual/Sun Lamp - BlenderWiki

thanks, one more question, I have a cube with a square hole and replaced that with a blue transparent plane, but the light won't shine through the transparency, is there a way to fix this?
