as you may all know, gmax is a free version of 3dsmax but with rendering taken out. i do believe Turbo Squid still hosts the file. pretty good. I recommend getting Maya 7 Personal Learning Edition or gmax if you are just beginning.

Anyone mentioned Blender3D yet?
And Yafray is a great renderer for Blender3D.
this was made using it. I think they used a custom renderer though.

hey, im kinda new here, but for all the people that want to get into 3D, you should try out gmax first. Its really old and discontinued but good for beginners (or maybe im just really dumb) because the interface is simple. The options are much more limited, which kinda helps if you're slow like me =), and theres no rendering engine, so your project usually looks like a piece of turd. I just started using blender and its a hell of a lot more complicated then gmax was.

HeLenka, to use those 3d objects you must import them in 3ds max. i use it often cause it's simply the best 3d modelling program there is. it has a lot of features.

dunno if it's already answered, but the site says "In case of using other software (3D Studio Max, AutoCAD etc.) you can easily convert objects to other popular formats (*.3ds,*.DWG,*.obj, etc.) with FREE GDL OBJECT EXPLORER.
For further info, please check here"
read the fine print.. lol

yeah... so gmax is not really good for beginners; if you're a beginner, you are highly unlikely to own it already and there is no way to get your hands on a copy anymore.. i wish... but i can't.

Another vote for Blender...

I started with Blender about 5 years ago. I was attracted by the attitude of it's creator, and by the support from its users. There seem to constantly be new scripts coming out for it, and always a new version to download.

I'm mostly interested in virtual reality, so I haven't learned to make photorealistic images, or complex character animations...but I'm so impressed by what other people have been making.

I purchased WireFusion and am using it to put my models online as Java applets.

For a completely different approach to easy 3D modeling, CB Model Pro is worth checking out. http://www.cbmodelpro.com It's free while the product is in beta which I would expect would be for some time to come.

While it's not a mature 3D product, since it's still in beta, it already shows signs of providing an interface that will appeal to a much broader audience than the more mechanical approaches of previous 3D modeling applications.

CB Model Pro is the big sibling of a wonderful 3D Modeling package for children. While it's aimed at children between 7 and 14, Cosmic Blobs is my 5 year old granddaughter's favorite computer activity. She needs a little help from time to time; but, she can do most of it by herself. So, that should tell you something about the CB Model Pro interface... which is very similar.

The operative words to describe these products are EASY and FUN. You can find tutorials in my blogs. Blobfans (CosmicBlobs) and CBModelProFans.

Hmm, an 3D programm for kids....
Why? why should there be a 3D programm for kids?
and next to that, there aren't much kids between 7 and 14 around here(almost 16 here).

but still it looks a bit basic and standart but it is cool. Every 3D programm added to this list is handy, like tif youre pc brakes down but you don't want to stop modeling youre latest thingy!!
