Blender has an awful rendering engine. It makes things look like a 1995 computer game, it is that bad. There are no features for soft shadows etc, it cant render cubic nurbs cuves without making them look like polygon curves. The renser engine and interface are both terrible. Even though it is a fwature rich app, wings is still better.

Add Blender!

I completly disagree with Milkdrop. The render engine is fine if you know how to use it. I know how to use it, and it works miracles. Blender is not a crappy application. I believe it to be the best free 3D program on the net. Here's a few of my pics, all rendered with the Blender rendering engine and I've only used the program for 6 months:

This is my first render, so don't expect to much:

And this is my current WIP:

Blender deserves to be on that list. There are features for soft shadows, and a lot. NURBS work fine. in my opinion, it has one of the best interfaces ever designed.

There is also OpenFX which is a very good free 3D modeller renderer and pretty good at animation. I havent used it, but i know people that have and they seemed to like it!

It is quite apparerent that you use yafray, which vastly improves the renders. I personally dont like blender either!

hahahah

I checked out "milkdrops" website, and what do ya know! He has his own mini testimonial about how much he likes blender and was impressed by its features!
I guess he posted his rant before he tried it. Good Riddance.
Blender is fking awesome.
It is open source.. it is written in C and is BLAZING FAST. On the most COMPLEX scenes it seems to open in under 5 seconds no matter what.
Yafray integration for high quality render or the internal renderer with a comprehensive set of procedural texture support for hi speed previews.
Blender ALSO supports full IK skinned mesh rendering and animation.
It has built in python scripting support, enabling single click export to DirectX .x files which I have used to make an instant art path from animated skinned meshes in blender to animated skinned meshes in directX with full ragdoll capability.
Someone who bags on a tool without using it, or really without knowing what the hell they are talking about raises my hackles.
Also, Milkdrop, your website (edit:removing "SUCKS DONKEY BALLS") is actually pretty sweet. You (edit: removing "should probably move out of your parents place and go to school or something. WAIT, you did, as some of your renders are "college" renders, or did you mean "collage"?"Who cares. ") have some nice pictures up there, I especially liked dot number 7 in your Blender lego cubes series.
BLENDER ROCKS !

Retraction

OK Milkdrop i checked out your site some more, and it does NOT suck...
It merely requires a little digging to uncover its appeal.
So.. YEah!!
Blender still rocks though.
Oh yeah, and i take back the part about your parents basement, cuz you probably have a swank flat in town. with your aestheticly pleasing art and marketing style skillz. Just stay off the drugs and you should have a great career ahead of you.
:P
Keep on rocking in the free world!!

Angry blender is modular

blender dosn't have every thing that you would want to make today games because it doesn't start out with the plugins that you can use

I'm using Wings3D, since it's what we use for our 3DModel class. I've done a couple of models. A mouse, building and a coke in can. LOL... It was quite annoying though, you really need to have a lot of patience.

I have used Anim8or and i still like it. I'll try DAZ when i have a comp that can handle it(running a 446 CPU ), i may be able to upgrade, YAY.

for textures i would try Texture Editor. Very nice free multipurpose app. ALso Iris and Image Texture Studio (I believe).

its not exactly free..but what about Zbrush? the demo doesn't have a time limit and it has a whole host of features, I don't know what ones are turned off in the full one cause I never really got into messing with the demo.

heh, thats all I got! haha oh and I've used pov-ray a tiny little bit, you've just gotta get a gui front-end for it
