Hdri

Hi folks,
Does anyone out there know much about HDRI (high dynamic range imaging) and it's uses. I have only just discovered it and seriously like what I see but it's all a bit new to me at the moment. Wondered if there were any places to download free HDRI images from or if anyone knew how to create them yourself. Have had some interesting results already within Vue d'Esprit playing with HDRI but still early days to stun to world with my creativity. Does HDRI work in Bryce too? If anyone can help I'd be very grateful.
Cheers

To answer your question if Bryce can handle doing HDRI it can, here is a link.

and to answer your question about HDRI i think wikipedia answers it quite well...
link

and for free downloads of images, well I'm assuming you are wanting it for your 3d scene, seeing that you mentioned Bryce. here are a couple of links if you want more just do a quick search on your fav search engine

hdri link 2

Hope this helps you out. Tamlin could probably explain some more on the subject seeing as he's done a lot of wonderful photo's in the past with HDRI (not to put Tamlin on the spot <3 )

I'd love to see your work when you're done.

Oh and lastly I have a tutorial on HDRI creation, (not mine, but found one) it's a pdf.

It's for cinema4d but It shows you how to create your own using photoshop and images... so the first 2/3 of the pdf would be useful for you.

Wow thanks a lot for the info. That was a great help. Unfortuantely I have Bryce 5 and not 6 so I don't think the HDRI will work within that version. But...the good news is I have Vue d'Esprit and it certainly works in that because I was playing with it today! The PDF should hopefully shed some light on things for me, thanks again. I'd be interested to see how they are made and fingers crossed once i know I can make my own. Great stuff!

I didn't reply to this immediately because it was in the 3D Modelling forum, and I've only worked with HDRI in Photoshop, but I can tell you what little I know. Basically, you need at least 2 shots of differing exposure, although I normally use the auto exposure bracketing setting on my camera to give me 3 shots. I normally bracket 1½ to 2 stops. Use an Aperture Priority setting (so the depth of field doesn't change between shots) and a tripod (of course). Open the three images up in Photoshop and select File > Automate > Merge to HDR... and follow the instructions. You can output to a 32-bit file (proper High Dynamic Range), 16-bit or 8-bit, depending on what you're planning on doing with the final image (very few Photoshop filters currently work with 32-bit images, and only a few more with 16-bit ones).

Here's some examples of HDR images I have produced:

Hi Tamlin,
Thanks for your reply. I will have an experiment with the info you sent and see what happens. I am using HDRI to light many 3D scenes in Vue d'Esprit ... the results are quite stunning. That's why I posted the question here under 3D modelling. Thanks again for your help though.
