I use Bryce,Amapi,Poser and Vue. Vue has the best foliage and trees etc and also has very atmospheric lighting. I don't know much about Maya or how Vue would work with it. I thought Maya was the big daddy of them all...can't maya create huge forests on it's own? If a friend of yours has Vue 5 (that's the version I have) I'd grab it anyway...what have you got to loose. I have had no problem with mine. It's a powerful low end of the scale 3D app. If you want to have a look at some of the things I have done with it pop over to my gallery on Zazzle and look at the Myths and Legends section...Click here to go there!

Hope this helps a little

Vue really is a powerful foliage program, but maya can create forests just as efficiently now with the paintFX section of maya, it's a little hard to understand at first, and I'm not sure about maya8 but maya7 doesn't support mental ray with paintFX, unless you convert to polygons but then your scene gets HUGE, so you'll have to composite your forest into your scene in post production. (assuming you're main lighting system is mental ray).

Check out the paint FX tutorials on AREA (it's a free registration to access tutorials)

how do you mean, "put them in the scene in post production"? you mean adding them later?

because the scene is inside a giantic forest so thats kinda hard.....and I need like huge pines, and there isn't a pine brush.....

Do you know a place where I can download brushes, or do you know how to make them on you're own??

anyways thanks for the help, and I have maya 8.5 at the moment not to happy with the change in the interface, but Im getting used to it. Then I will grab that version of vue as you said gingerbloke, it just cost me €25,- so why not.....

yes, the process is called "compositing" basically you render out everything in "layers" then in a program like digital fusion, shake, or adobe after effects you will composite the layers together... It will help save with rendering times in the end, etc... I can point you in the right direction later if you do not fully understand this yet.

maya has a "pine forest" brush it's under TREE MESH not the TREE folder, when you look in your brushes folder.

well basically brushes are made up of tubes, and from there, they branch out to well branches and then twigs, and then leaves...

kinda self explanitory but each one of these sections can be custom textured and tweaked to your hearts desire. I found a wonderful tutorial about 8months ago that shows how to make realistic grass, it really does help with the understanding of paintFX in maya here's the link

here's a quick tip when dealing with brush type tools.

If you hold down "b" and you left click and drag left or right, you will change the size of the brush.

good luck
