i think you could try a free version/ app,
but if you have the money and you really want to do it(it costs lots of money)
you should buy cinema 4d or maya i think

I'm not much of a modeler myself as I've just started 3D modeling (currently using Blender). But from what I've heard, Maya would be the way to go; although it's apparently much more complex when compared to something like 3DSM or Cinema 4D. Much of the cg work in movies these days is done in Maya. But it's waaay over my head for the moment.

z-brush is the best organic modeler on the market hands down....

Maya is nice but...

I personally use Max because I am used to the interface and tool set, also I create alot of low poly stuff for indie games, but when I go to buy a second program it will be Z-brush without hesitation...

Modo.
It's the BEST Organic modelling/texturing/rendering package out there. And it's darn easy to use.

I'd go with ZBrush 2 myself. I have the full version (obtained by thoroughly ignoble, unrecommended means) and it just blasts my pants right off.

what are the thoughts on Hexagon?

I tried Hexagon 2.1 demo and even though I am a newb at 3D really... I found it a little easier than modeling in Cinema4D or Bryce when creating organic looking meshes. I was off and running with some of the oddest looking meshes that were created in no time. I almost purchased it but I read reports it was filled with many bugs so I didn't bother and just got Cinema4D instead.

Hexagon you say?

I've heard and seen the prog, but i wasn't to pleased with it. Missed a lot of options and i think the prog crashed like way too many times when I tryed to use it. But I think that was an older version somewhere around the 1.3 I think.

if your just trying to make abstracts, stick with Cinema 4D, it will the easiest for you to learn, and yes Zbrush is a fantastic modeling app. but I hate the UI, you might wanna have a look at Mudbox wich has just been realeased

mudbox

I did some work for Alias Wavefront, before they were purchased by Autodesk, and they are quite dependent on Maya...

Alias Wavefront has been a part of some of the greatest CGI movies to ever be made. Maya was even used to create the worlds first 100% CGI designed automobile (which was a Porsche by the way).

That said, the equipment they ran was Cascading Sun Servers (Spark's at the time) and it pushes the capabilities of Maya way beyond anything you'll ever see on a home based machine... even a Quad Core!

Now that Autodesk owns Alias, including the Maya package, i'd expect some incredible suites to become available in the near future.

Mike.
