3D Programs

What are some popular 3D programs? And whats a render? Some of the coolest art, in my opinion, is done with renders, like abstract stuff so I wnt to learn how to do it.

What is a render? Render by the 3D program is a very complicated sequence...

For the begining I recommend you Cinema 4D or XSI Softimage. These are very simple-lay-and-modeling softwares. If you need Cinema 4D help check http://www.c4dcafe.com and www.maxon.net . VERY good pages. ^^

I started out with Bryce, as it has a very simple interface. But I would definately recommend Cinema4D, (what I currently use), due to it's documentation. Maxon has some great tutorials to get you started, and the program's learning curve also isn't huge. Rendering though takes a lot of practice, a lot more difficult than I thought it was when I started.

I'm going for maya, and rendering isn't a programm or something it's the final thing you do when youre ready with modeling, adding lights, texturing,(animate). then you define the render options and push the button.

I think it's just what you are used to use. Since you haven't used any of them you can choose freely. 3D Studio Max is very popular and has tons of resources available for it as well as user communities. Lightwave/Maya/Cinema4D comes next I with a bit smaller userbase. At least I think so. Every one of these software's can do pretty much the same stuff. They are all professional level products. I myself am a cinema4d user but I might as well be using something else. I've just learned to get used to c4d. That's all.

I use Alias Maya 6.0 and I would consider any app the best for 3d modeling and rendering but Id have to say that they have their own capabilities.

I'd recommend trying out a few different ones. Most of the modelers have free, older versions that are typically included on the CD's on 3D related magazines. Some can also be downloaded.

Some people prefer Maya, some Lightwave, some 3DSMax, some C4D. Personally, 3DSMax is the only program that made sense to me, so that's what I use

I've heard that both Truespace and Carrara are good programs for beginners. I used Carrara a bit years and years ago when it was still called Ray Dream Studio... but.. then I found Max
