You have to have lots of money and a serious comitment to modeling for you to benifit from alias products. You should master bryce before you upgrade to a more advanced product. As soon as you feel bryce is holding you back ,upgrade, by all means!

Don't forget that Maya is intended for graphics professionals though - its bloody hard to use, and will baffle all but the most dedicated or experienced individuals. I'd start a little lower and use a program intended for the mainstream before going for something atomic-powered...

For starters, either 3dStudio max or c4d (where c4d is the better choice)

I think you are best going for C4D (as Metecra recommends). Its relatively easy to use, produces great results, and can be used for a great deal of 3D functions!

Does anyone have a good tutorial for Bryce, all the ones I have seen are pretty simple, without getting into good details.

There's a big index of them over at http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials/Bryce/All/ , but unfortunately everyone who seems to write tutorials for Bryce focuses the subject on Abstracts or basic art. :/

Thanks, I am looking for some good space backgrounds for my collection of spaceships. I bought bryce 5 thinking that could do the job, but I am kind of dissapointed right now, I should have invested in Vue instead.

Well im a max artist. TBH All programs have tehre weakness and there advantages over another.
Many modern day tv effects houses use Lightwave. Voyager, Enterprise, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly where all done on Lightwave.
Now im a Max artist and max is perfectly fine for most jobs as well. With third party render plugins like Brazil it is more than capable of producing some not quality pictures.
Most 3d programs have third party render add ones that can produce better rendering than the defualt built in renderer.
So really using any of the known programs should be fine to make space stuff. As really its a very low end scene and simple enough to pull off.
I hope this helps...
