Or.. Well, it helps a bit. Using your technique, you end up with two layers. One for the object, and one for the effects, with the effects-layer on top. If you then select the effects layer and use CTRL+E (put together downwards or something like that (i'm using the swedish version)) you get it as one layer. Then you can do whatever you want. Erase!
