umm, Photoshop has an auto selection option if you have your move tool selected... (v is the hotkey) if you look at the top of the screen RIGHT below the menu's there's the extra tool options for your selected tool. In there you will have the option to check on "auto select layer" along with "auto select groups" show transform controls is also handy for certain jobs.
Personally I hate this option. there is another way to do the "auto select" and that's holding down "ctrl+left click" will do the same as the auto select layer, and to deselect with this one, you just "ctrl+left" click on the canvas.
now if you are not using photoshop...ummm please specify which program so we may help you better
