I agree with using corel draw or some other vector drawing software is better. There is a way to get the shapes that you can use and that is looking at some fonts, just turn them into shapes and use pattern or hand manipulate. There are so many fonts out there that seem more towards patterns than actual fonts. If you don't have Corel or Illustrator try downloading free Serif draw 4, or Inkscape, both are free and its a start.

Hope it helps, I find there are so many ways to achieve the same goal it gets confusing sometimes.
