Have you tried lofting a bezier curve? If you're using 3dsmax (Which would be important, since I'm sure the process is different in Maya), you could create a line and a circle. Loft the line to the circle and voila... worm. Granted, you'd still need to bone and skin.

Hope that helps. I'm still sort of new to the 3dmodeling bracket myself.
