The symbol, as already mentioned, has been used soooo much. However...I like the idea and think there's some potential to work with. I wouldn't use the traditional symbol, but use it as a basis of ideas. An example being, a cartoon fish or a vector mascot following the symbol structure might work well, due to it being aimed at young people. It would give them something to relate to in terms of religion and symbolic identity, which the majority of youth groups focus themselves around.
The type is nice, it's very strong, I like it. So many options you could use with type like that.
I'm not too sure on the second idea though. To me it screams out Y-M-C-A and might confuse people in what kind of 'group' it actually is.
