Thanks guys for your responses. It was saved as an optimized jpeg, I notice on the thumbnail the artefacts (thanks tamlin) are more noticeable than on the enlargement. but the background still looks wierd, lines and things, it's smooth on my desk top. Should reducing the original image size, then editing, make a difference, less to compress?
